WELCOME TO MARVEL OPARA CERAMICS

CREATING FUNCTIONAL TABLEWARE & ARTISTIC SCULPTURES

WELCOME TO MY IMAGINATION

I’ve been doing pottery as a hobby for many years, and it all began at school with my wonderful teacher Paddy lovely who taught me how to work the potters kick wheel. I still have the vase I made today where I wrote my name across it!

I didn’t take pottery as an exam, but I have used it on an off, especially when I was pregnant with my children. In fact, it’s been very therapeutic for me, especially when I am going through something traumatic. Clay is very powerful to work with as it serves a way to be centre focused and being in touch with your creativity. No words, just telling a story through your hands.

As I am registered blind, I map the world through my dancing, moving, shaping imagination. Therefore, clay for me is like tapping into a world within, how I see it, it’s almost like I have to fill in the gaps…obviously there is no right or wrong way of doing things as I cannot relate to perfection and working with this element is very forgiving as you can change your mind at any moment as there is no right or wrong way in what I do…Like a child I dip in and out of reality engaging a lot with my subconscious mind. And I enjoy making things from nature, fairytales or mythology.

MY CREATIONS

ABOUT MY WORK

I love making Head pots, even though I do not see faces and create what I perceive of the no faces I make. This came about one day when I was trying to make a vase and it wasn’t going how I wanted it to go and as usual I go with the flow of the clay and how it wants to react under my hands. I turned it upside down and there I felt a face and turned it into one. My head pots can be a sculptural piece or used as a functional object.

The most complicated piece I have made is a chess set the figures being of Egyptian style as I love the artefacts and history which I was inspired by when I was a child and even more so when I visited Egypt in my early 20s. My pieces also reflect my Nigerian origins with their hairstyles and prints especially on the plates and bowls, making some into wall hangings as an artistic piece. Clay for me is like Shiatsu (touch communication) invoking all the elements and, because it’s from the earth, I feel a sense of unity when I am engaging with terracotta clay. I feel I am tapping into something within myself, which comes alive, and time and space have no place.
